Humanity is uhm, lots and lots of people who do different things, and the same people do different things at different times, so yes - we're both stardust and pondscum, I don't have difficulty accepting both.. maybe I'm missing the point? Both theories share the same outcomes, but may have different ad-hoc principles, different background assumptions, or different breadth in the domain they cover.
